UPSC CSE EXAM PATTERN

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is a three-stage process that tests candidates on various aspects to assess their suitability for a career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other Group A and Group B services. Here’s a brief overview of the exam pattern.

Preliminary Examination (Prelims):

Objective type questions (multiple-choice) with negative marking.

Two papers: General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II (Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT).

General Studies Paper-I covers subjects like History, Geography, Economics, Polity, Science & Technology, and Current Affairs.

General Studies Paper-II assesses candidates’ comprehension, analytical, and interpersonal skills.

Main Examination (Mains):

Descriptive type questions to assess the candidate’s depth of understanding.

Nine papers, including one qualifying paper (Indian language) and two papers on English, which are of qualifying nature.

The seven merit-based papers cover Essay, General Studies I to IV, Optional Paper I, and Optional Paper II.

Subjects include Indian History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science & Technology, Ethics, and the selected optional subject.

Interview (Personality Test):

Candidates who qualify the Main Examination are invited for an interview.

The interview assesses the candidate’s personality, leadership qualities, and depth of knowledge.

The interview carries a weightage of 275 marks.

NOTE:

Preliminary Examination is of qualifying nature for the Mains.

Mains and Interview scores are considered for the final merit list.

Negative marking applies in the Preliminary Examination.

Optional Subject: Candidates choose one optional subject for two papers in the Mains.

The optional subject can be selected based on the candidate’s background or interest.

Syllabus: The syllabus covers a wide range of topics, including current events, history, geography, polity, economy, science and technology, ethics, and the optional subject chosen by the candidate.

Understanding the exam pattern and syllabus thoroughly is crucial for effective preparation. Aspirants are encouraged to stay updated with any changes in the exam pattern and align their study strategies accordingly.
